History of Boko Haram in Nigeria


Boko Haram is one of the most deadly terrorist group in the world and no doubt the most deadly terrorist group in Nigeria. Boko Haram have been in existence in Nigeria since 2002 though were not referred to as a terrorist group.


You cannot talk about the history of Boko Haram terrorist group in Nigeria without making mention of Mohammed Yusuf, who headed Boko Haram after it was founded by a group of Islamic clerics in Borno state.

Mohammed Yusuf, who was a known fundamentalist and his thinking was influenced by Wahhabi theology. Their intention was to implement Sharia law in Nigeria and turn the country to full Islamic country.

Though Boko Haram was radical when it started, it was not violent. Not until 2009 several members of Boko Haram were arrested including Mohammed Yusuf.

Mohammed Yusuf was executed without trial.

Abubakar Shekau took over as the new leader of the group resulting to the use of violence and terrorist attacks to advance the agenda of the group.

The activities of this group as a terrorist group has affected not just lives but also the economy of Nigeria especially in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.

Boko Haram have taken credit for series of attacks in Nigeria as well as bomb blasts and kidnapping.
