Mbo leaders endorse Ekere

Prominent leaders of Mbo Local Government Area have endorsed the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obong Nsima Ekere, as the next Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

They spoke during the APC campaign rally at Enwang, the Mbo Local Government Headquarters on Monday.

Barr Effiong Abia, a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, set the tone when he said that almost all Mbo’s 51,112 votes will be turned in for Obong Ekere because of the development projects he attracted to Mbo as Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He enumerated those projects to include road construction and renovation of various school buildings.

Barr Abia, who is the APC Akwa Ibom South Senatorial Campaign Coordinator, said Mbo people were also supporting President Muhammadu Buhari, who proved to be their friend as far back as 1984 when he appointed an Mbo son, Late Chief Etim Inyang, to the exalted office of Inspector-General of Police.

Chief Ita Awak, the Director of Air Worthiness Standards at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, declared that “there is time for everything on earth and the time of Obong Nsima Ekere has come.”

Chief Awak said he was convinced that Obong Ekere had the interest of Mbo and the larger Oro Nation at heart, from his interaction with him, and that “he is determined to bring joy to us.”

Prince Victor Antai, the APC House of Representatives Candidate for Oron Federal Constituency, said, unlike before, the five local government areas of Oro Nation, had significant voting strength, through his instrumentality, which will be deployed to the advantage of the APC.

Prince Alex Nyong, a former Chairman of Mbo Local Government, condemned the renaming of the Ibaka Deep Seaport as Ibom Deep Seaport by the PDP State Government of Deacon Udom Emmanuel, arguing that all other seaports in Nigeria like Tin Can Island Port, Apapa Port and Onne Port were named after their location.

Other speakers from Mbo like Prince Eneta Bassey, the APC Chapter Chairman, Chief Edet Moses, a veteran politician, and Mrs Nkoyo Isang, a prominent women leader, all endorsed Obong Ekere’s ambition.

Rt Rev Effiong Esedeke, the Methodist Bishop of Oron, who led the opening prayer, predicted an easy victory for Obong Ekere.

“We believe that the time has come for change in Akwa Ibom State and Obong Nsima Ekere, you are going to lead that change,” he said.

Senator Nelson Efiong, the representative of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, assured Obong Ekere of victory in the governorship election.

“I want to assure you that come rain, come shine, on May 29, 2019, you will be sworn in as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. Obong Nsima Ekere is a good man. There is no need for much talk. Udom Emmanuel has done Oron bad. For the last three and a half years, he has been playing Oro Nation politics. On 2nd March, Oro Nation will play Udom Emmanuel election,” he said.

Group Captain Sam Ewang (retd), the Chairman of the APC Campaign Council, said he could guarantee that Obong Ekere would perform.

“I stand to tell you that leadership is a responsibility and having known that he will not fail you, I take responsibility to present to you the incoming Governor and his deputy. I’m saying so because I know that some people come and say what they don’t mean. I’m here to assure you that whatever he says, he will do it. If it is not so, I would not be here,” he said.

Group Captain Ewang assured Mbo people that the name change of the seaport by the Udom Administration will be reversed by the incoming APC Government, wondering what the six other deep seaports in the state would be called, when they are developed, if the name change from Ibaka Deep Seaport to Ibom Deep Seaport was allowed to stand.

Senator John Udoedehe, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State APC Reconciliation Committee, lauded Obong Ekere as a very straightforward and honest man and a man of honour.

“Mr Employment is here. Mr Prosperity is here. Don’t waste your votes. Udom is gone. Those that make Governors are complete here,” he said.
